You’re a Cheap Date!

In our current economic climate, it is important to find ways to save money in every situation. Families are purchasing fewer groceries, schools are releasing teachers, and single men and women are cutting back on dates. Dating is expensive—lavish dinners, weekend movies, and spontaneous trips to theme parks all add up. Luckily, there are several ways to save money while impressing a potential mate.

1. Before setting up a date, one must make sure that your potential date is a good-natured person who enjoys your company. If you take out a pretentious girl who turns their nose up at everything or a “player” looking for a free ride, it is almost guaranteed that you will not have a good time.
2. After making your love connection, assess your location. Are you in the city or in the suburbs? Do you have access to public transportation, or will you need a car? A clear game plan including directions and transportation is very important for an error-free date.
3. What type of personality does your date have? Are they playful or scholarly? Keep their temperament into consideration as you prepare. Heaven Che, a sophomore in high school, once had a date that was more fun than fancy. “I went to my boyfriend’s house, and we played a bunch of video games. It was a great way to break the ice.” If video games aren’t your thing, pick a DVD from your collection of movies—preferably a romantic comedy.
4. Try going to the park to enjoy the summer sun. Bring a few sandwiches, a bottle of wine, and a blanket for a casual picnic. Sit on a park bench and chat until night falls, like Sydney and Dre in Brown Sugar. Consider watching fireworks on Independence Day as well—very romantic!
5. Because it is summer, there are several free events in almost every city. Screen on the Green, movie festivals, concerts, and even school or church-inspired events are great ways to save money. With a little creativity and the right girl or guy, money won’t be an issue.
