Mammi-Ama Ofori is the epitomy of a lifestyle brand creator. Not only does she have an innovative (and might I add, super-cool) knitwear accessories line Garment Colors & Knits (winter collection available in February on Etsy and Sense Of Fashion), but she dabbles in music, acting, internet radio and wellness living—if that doesn’t encompass lifestyle, then I don’t know what does! With more than 2,000 Twitter followers and so many Facebook friends she needs multiples accounts to house them, Mammi-Ama has mastered the art of marketing, branding and producing excentricly classic knitwear pieces for The Purple Vintage Space Princess.
1. When did you know you wanted to become a designer?
I knew I was a designer when I started creating different kinds of pieces just for the pure joy of it. My mother taught me how to knit and crochet when I was eight years old. I loved everything about it; so, I started learning different stitches and creating my own pieces. I remember when I first started wearing my creations way back in junior high school and my friends would marvel over what I made. It was so nice to receive that kind of feedback. It took me a bit of time to view myself as a designer who would also sell their designs. That confidence definitely came with much trial and error. I’m so happy that I believe in myself and my work. Now and I am grateful for every single moment and experience that has come to me.
2. Who in the fashion world inspires you? (Fashion designer, public figure, model, etc.)
I could give answers to this question for days because I find inspiration in EVERTYHING and EVERYONE I come in contact with. Many that inspire me are not “famous” or in the public eye—they are just fulfilled individuals who love life and fully express themselves in a fashionable way that represents their uniqueness. One of my favorite inspirational celebrity style icons is Grace Jones. I love her uniqueness and originality. I am always inspired when I see people being true to themselves when it comes to styling their everyday look. There are billions of us co-existing on this planet and each of us are unique. Our fashion sense should reflect this, yet we see so much of what I like to call “fashion-clones” out there. I love when people follow their inner guidance and dress according to how they feel not what societial norms dictate for them. This is just one of many reasons why I love wearing and reconstruction vintage clothing & creating my own designs.
3. What’s in the future for Mammi-Ama Ofori and The Purple Vintage Space Princess?
Continuious expansion! My future consists of constant creation, creation and more creation. Not only with my knitwear designs but also with my music, wellness appreciation, and nutrition etc. It truly never ends because new ideas are always flowing to me. I created The Purple Vintage Space Princess as a life & style brand to spread love of life. I enjoy helping others open up and ignite their awareness and live their very best life each and every day as I learn to do the same with my own. My dream is to inspire people to feel good from the inside out and to spread that happiness to everyone they meet. It’s totally contagious in the best of ways:) You will definitely see more collaborations and projects with other like-minded people on a worldwide platform. Nothing is impossible and I have been pilling up many dreams that I am excited to see manifest in physical form. STAY TUNED!
4. What’s in for Winter?
Winter is one of my favorite seasons when it comes to designing my knit accessories. This winter I will be bringing you my brand new Neck-Tie Scarves, Headband Jewelry, Fingerless Gloves & a small line of Macbook/Ipad Decorative Cases. These cases are inspired by my adoration of owls and nature. I’m really excited to introduce the 2011 winter collection.
5. Describe your design aesthetic in three words.
Innovative, Unique, Colorful
